Backing up to Box

Keep backups in a folder of your own Box account, connected by signing in with Box.

4 min readStorage

Box works as a storage destination for SSH servers, the agent, WordPress sites, Railway and Render databases, Kubernetes and DNS zones. Backups go to a folder in your own Box account; nothing is kept by VPS Snaps.

Step 1 — Sign in with Box

In Storage → Add destination, choose Box, name the destination and the folder to make in your Box account, and select Sign in with Box. Approve access on Box's screen.

Box has no narrower permission for an app, like Google Drive's drive.file, so Box asks you to grant read and write access to all your files and folders. VPS Snaps keeps to the folder it makes for the destination.

Step 2 — Choose it on a backup job

Pick the destination on any backup job. Each job gets its own folder inside the one you named. Your servers, agents, WordPress sites and dump containers upload with a token Box limits to that job's folder, valid for about an hour. Restores download through Box's own download link, which lasts about 15 minutes; no token is handed out for downloads.

Free disk space for each backup

Box needs each backup as one finished file. So the server, agent, WordPress site, or the dump container in Railway, Render or Kubernetes, writes the backup to its own disk first, then uploads it. It needs free disk about the size of the backup.

The largest file your Box plan takes

Box limits the size of each file by plan: 250 MB on a free personal account, and more on paid plans, for example 5 GB on Personal Pro and Business. VPS Snaps reads your account's limit and refuses a larger backup before uploading it, with a message that names the limit. Upgrade the Box plan, or choose another storage destination for that job.

Backups that pass through VPS Snaps: 64 MB

A few backups stream through VPS Snaps instead of going straight from your side: a Railway database connected without admin access, a Railway or Render dump the platform will not run in your account, and a server that cannot upload for itself. VPS Snaps never writes your data to its own disk, so these can go to Box only up to 64 MB. For anything larger, choose another storage destination for that job.

If your Box is a company account

A Box Enterprise admin can block apps that are not published. If Box will not let you approve VPS Snaps, ask your Box admin to allow it, then sign in again.

What to know about Box

Backups count against your Box account's storage. Retention deletes old backups and purges them from Box's trash, so the space comes back. Each backup is checked against the SHA-1 Box records for the file. Your Box sign-in tokens are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before they are stored.

Disconnecting

Delete the destination under Storage. VPS Snaps deletes its stored Box tokens and revokes its access at Box. The backups already in your Box stay there and are yours: open them in Box, or delete them yourself.

Still stuck?

Open the failed run under Backup History and copy the error text out of the log — pasting that into your first message is usually the difference between one reply and four.
